Getting to know your doula and being able to feel comfortable around her is a very important part of this particular business relationship. Though the consultation and prenatal appointments are vital parts of fostering a good relationship, I’m sure you’d like to know more about me before you decide to schedule a consultation!

I was born and raised in Tennessee, and I love it dearly. I’m a huge animal lover, and am currently co-habiting with several creatures - more specifically, two dogs and two cats. I have a fine-tuned sense of humor, and I believe laughter is very important. It keeps you healthy! When I’m not immersed in all things doula, I enjoy reading, writing, spending time outdoors, and knitting.
I don’t currently have children of my own, but I don’t believe this affects my ability to be a wonderful doula. The majority of obstetricians are men, but that doesn’t prevent them from having successful practices! I’m also quite sure my veterinarian has never been a dog, but the jury’s still out on that one!
Since childhood I’ve been fascinated with pregnancy and the childbirth process. By the age of 11, I was watching fairly graphic documentaries and television shows about birth, and decided that I wanted to become a midwife! I’ve always loved babies and children, so it seemed natural to gravitate towards a profession which honored that love.
I first learned about doulas a couple of years ago, and was fascinated by the concept. Doulas are relatively scarce in my area, so I had no idea such an occupation existed! I began reading and self-educating as much as I could, and after months of thinking, I decided to train and certify with Childbirth International. Working through CBI was a very rewarding and eye-opening experience. I became certified through CBI on December 30th, 2007. I also completed an intensive 2-day labor doula training with CAPPA in August of 2007 totaling almost 16 hours. I became certified through CAPPA in April of 2008.
I believe women are strong and our bodies were perfectly designed by nature to birth children. I believe the vast majority of women are capable of birthing their babies without medical intervention. I believe women should be fully informed and well-educated on their rights in order to achieve their optimal birth experience. I believe in a woman’s right to birth wherever, however, and with whomever she chooses.
Childbirth and the rights of pregnant women have quickly become my passions, and I’m thoroughly dedicated to supporting and educating women and their families through the life-changing event of birth.
I’m a member in good standing of Nashville Birth Network, Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association (CAPPA) (I’m also on the CAPPA leadership board and volunteer my time as their webmaster), Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA), and Citizens for Midwifery. I also volunteer my time as a doula for Operation Special Delivery, an organization dedicated to providing volunteer doula services to women whose partners have been injured, killed, or deployed due to the war.
